Getting the most from a north-east Adelaide roof

Roofs around Redwood Park have their own characteristics, and knowing them is most of the job. Here's what we look at.
Trees are not a dealbreaker: This is one of the leafiest parts of Adelaide, and plenty of homes here have solar working beautifully under mature trees. Shading shifts through the year as the sun angle moves, so we model it rather than eyeball it — and where it's an issue, panel-level optimisation means one shaded panel no longer drags down the rest of the array. You don't have to choose between your trees and your solar.
Tile roofs are routine: Most homes through Tea Tree Gully and Modbury are tiled, and we install on tile every week. With the right mounting hardware and someone who knows what they're doing, tiles are no harder than metal. If we do break a tile, we replace it and tell you.
Split roofs often perform better: Homes through Highbury, Banksia Park and Vista sit on slopes, so roof faces don't always point the textbook direction. That's frequently an advantage. An array split across two aspects generates for longer through the day rather than spiking at noon — which suits how most households actually use power, and works better with a battery.
You can fit more than you'd expect: Panels have improved enormously. Where a system five years ago might have managed 6.6 kW on your roof, today's higher-output panels can often reach 10 kW in the same space. Roof area matters less than it used to; getting the layout right matters more.

Established homes, and the systems already on them

North-east Adelaide was an early adopter of rooftop solar, and a lot of those systems are now well past their prime. If yours went on ten or twelve years ago, three things are probably true. It’s small: Systems of that era were commonly 1.5 kW to 3 kW. Panels then were around 250W; today’s are 475W to 510W. The same roof area now generates far more than it did. The inverter is near the end of its life: Inverters typically last 10 to 15 years. A failure is annoying, but it’s also the natural moment to reassess the whole system rather than replace like for like. Your switchboard may need attention: Homes built through the 1970s, 80s and 90s often have boards with no room for the additional protection a battery requires, or types that no longer meet current standards. We check this at the assessment and price it into the quote, rather than raising it on installation day. If you’re on a low feed-in tariff and exporting most of what you generate, adding storage will usually do more for your bill than adding panels.

What you need to know about the network

Flexible Exports: Since July 2023, every new solar system in South Australia must support Flexible Exports. Rather than a fixed limit, your export cap adjusts automatically depending on how much solar the local network is carrying — typically up to 10 kW per phase, reducing when the network is congested. Most customers export more over a year than they would under the old fixed arrangement. It needs a compatible inverter and an internet connection. Smart meters: If you don’t have a compliant smart meter, one needs to be installed before your system can be switched on. That’s arranged through your electricity retailer, and it’s the single most common cause of delay between installation day and the system actually running. We flag it early so it’s underway before we arrive. Single or three phase: Most homes in the area are single phase, which affects battery choice and what’s achievable with blackout backup. We confirm this at the site assessment. We handle the SA Power Networks application as part of your installation.

Our recent work in north-east Adelaide

Most of our north-east work involves homes that already have solar. These are established suburbs where plenty of roofs have had panels on them for a decade or more — and the conversation now is about replacing tired inverters, adding serious storage, and running the house on its own power well into the evening. Here's some of what we've installed nearby.

Fairview Park — 10.45 kW solar with 48 kWh of battery storage, three phase

A three-phase home set up to cover most of its own consumption. Twenty-two Jinko Solar Tiger Neo III 475W panels for 10.45 kW of generation, six GoodWe 8.3 kWh batteries giving 48 kWh of usable storage, and a GoodWe 10 kW three-phase inverter.
Systems this size suit households with substantial loads across both day and evening — ducted air conditioning, pool pumps, a workshop, an electric vehicle — where there's enough consumption for the storage to work hard rather than sit half full.

10 kW Fox hybrid inverter with 41.93 kWh storage and whole-home backup

This customer already had solar and wanted serious storage to go with it. Rather than leave the existing inverter in place and add a separate battery inverter, we replaced it with a FoxESS KH 10 kW hybrid and DC-coupled the system — which is the more efficient arrangement where it's an option, because the solar charges the battery directly instead of converting twice. That's paired with 41.93 kWh of FoxESS CQ6 storage and a 50A backup circuit covering all power and lighting circuits in the house, with dedicated RCBOs for the backup side. Protective bollards were installed at the battery location as required. The result is a home that runs on its own power through the evening and keeps running through an outage.

Elizabeth — 6.6 kW system on a shed roof

A replacement system installed on a shed roof: fifteen Canadian Solar 440W panels with a GoodWe 5 kW single-phase inverter, tested and commissioned. Shed and outbuilding roofs are often the better option on a property — usually a simpler roof plane, better orientation, and no working around hips, valleys or skylights.

Rebates available

Two federal incentives reduce what you pay upfront, and both shrink on a published timetable. Solar panels earn Small-scale Technology Certificates, applied as a discount on your system price. The number of certificates drops every January until the scheme ends in 2030. My roof is tiled. Is that a problem?

Not at all. Tiles need the right mounting hardware and someone who takes care, but they’re standard work. If we do break a tile we replace it, and we’ll tell you.

There are big trees near my roof. Can I still get solar?

Usually, yes — but the design matters more. Shading changes through the year as the sun angle moves, so we assess it properly rather than assuming. In some cases panel-level optimisation or a split array across two roof faces makes a significant difference. We’ll be honest if shading means solar won’t stack up for you.

My system is from 2011 and it’s tiny. Is it worth replacing?

Often, yes. A 1.5 kW system from that era might be replaced with 10 kW or more on the same roof. We’ll price the options — repair, like-for-like replacement, or a full upgrade with storage — and let you compare them properly.

How do you compare to the big advertised deals?

We’re not the cheapest and we don’t try to be. What you get instead is the owner on your roof, honest sizing, a switchboard checked before installation day rather than after, and someone twenty minutes away when you need us in five years.
