Solar Panel and Battery Installation in Meningie and the Coorong
Meningie is a long way from Adelaide, and that shapes everything about buying solar here. Companies that quote cheap from the city are pricing a job they’d rather not drive to — and you’ll notice that most when something needs attention two years later.

Why solar and battery make particular sense here
For most of the state, a battery is a financial decision. Around Meningie and through the Coorong, it’s often a practical one as well.
Outages are longer here: Rural feeders and SWER lines take longer to restore than metro supply. If you’ve lost a freezer full of meat, or had to run a generator to keep water pumping, you already know the value of backup. A properly configured battery covers that — and we can set your system up so your solar keeps recharging it through a multi-day outage rather than draining once and stopping.
Exported power is worth little: South Australian feed-in tariffs sit around 5 to 8 cents, often capped daily, and network charges can apply to daytime exports. Meanwhile the power you use yourself is worth what you’d otherwise pay for it. That gap is the whole argument for storage, and it applies everywhere in SA — but out here, where you may also want backup, the case stacks up twice.
Rural properties have real daytime loads: Irrigation, bore pumps, cool rooms, sheds and workshops all draw during daylight hours. That’s the ideal profile for solar. Sizing around those loads rather than around a household average makes a substantial difference to what you get back.
SWER lines and rural connections
A lot of properties in the Coorong district are supplied by single-wire earth return lines. It’s worth understanding what that means for solar.
SWER lines carry less capacity than standard supply, so networks have historically been cautious about how much solar can be connected and exported. Flexible Exports has changed that picture — it now applies statewide including SWER, and rather than being held to a low fixed export limit, your system’s cap adjusts automatically with network conditions. Most customers export more over a year than they would have under the old arrangement.
What it requires is a compatible inverter and an internet connection so your system can receive the network signal. On properties with patchy connectivity that’s worth checking early, and we do.

Off-grid: For some properties out this way — particularly where a grid connection would need a long line extension — off-grid is genuinely the better answer. We design, quote and install those systems. It’s a different exercise from a grid-connected install and deserves a proper conversation about your actual usage before anyone quotes a number.
Our recent work in Meningie and the Coorong
The reasons for going solar out here aren't quite the same. Outages last longer on rural feeders, sheds and pumps carry real daytime loads, and a lot of the systems that went up ten years ago are now well overdue for replacement. Most of our Coorong work involves backup power, storage, or both.
Off-grid solar and battery for a shed
This property needed power to a shed with no practical grid connection. Running a new line to an outbuilding can cost more than the entire solar system, so a standalone off-grid setup was the sensible answer.
Eleven AIKO Solar Neostar 475W panels for 5.225 kW of generation, with a Sigenergy SigenStor 8.06 kWh battery and a 12 kW Sigen Energy Controller and Gateway. Shed power points wired to their own dedicated RCBOs.
The shed now runs independently, with no connection fees, no supply charges and no reliance on the network.
10.925 kW solar with 16.64 kWh battery and whole-home backup — system upgrade
This customer had an older, undersized solar system and wanted to bring the whole thing up to date rather than patch it. We replaced it with twenty-three Trina Solar Vertex S+ 475W panels for nearly 11 kW of generation, and added 16.64 kWh of GoodWe battery storage.
The job included full home backup and the switchboard work to support it, plus network pre-approval and the meter upgrade request — the two administrative steps that hold most installs up. Handling those is part of what we do.

This customer's goal was straightforward: cut their electricity bills as far as possible, ideally to nothing. That means sizing the system around their actual consumption pattern rather than just filling the available roof, then pairing it with enough storage to carry them through the evening and overnight.

I've got a generator for outages. Is a battery better?
Different tools. A generator needs fuel, needs starting, and only runs when you're there to run it. A battery takes over automatically the moment the power drops, silently, whether you're home or not — and it works for you the other 364 days a year by storing your own solar instead of sitting idle.
For long outages a generator still has a place, and plenty of properties out here sensibly keep both. But if you're running a generator a few times a year and paying full price for grid power the rest of the time, a battery earns its keep in a way a generator never will.

Will a battery run my whole house in an outage?
It can, with enough capacity and the right inverter — but there are trade-offs, and things like electric hot water and air conditioning are the usual constraints. Essential circuits backup is more common and much cheaper. We’ll size it against your actual loads and tell you honestly what it will and won’t carry.
What happens if my internet drops out?
Your system keeps generating and keeps charging your battery. Flexible Exports needs an internet connection so your inverter can receive the network signal, but losing that connection doesn't shut anything down — the system falls back to a default export limit until it reconnects. You'll still be running your own power and filling your own battery.
Out this way connectivity can be patchy, so it's something we check during the site assessment rather than discover afterwards.
